Overview

ILVE Nostalgie gas ovens are designed to ignite quickly and burn gas efficiently, producing a clean, stable flame during operation.

A slight gas smell may be noticeable briefly during ignition. This is normal and should dissipate within a few seconds.

However, a persistent or strong gas odor during operation is not normal and must be addressed immediately.

In most cases, gas smell concerns are related to ignition timing, airflow conditions, or burner performance. In some cases, it may indicate a gas supply or combustion issue requiring service.

Common Causes

If the oven display and controls operate normally but the oven does not heat, the issue is typically related to one of the following:

  • Normal ignition odor (brief at startup)
  • Delayed ignition
  • Weak or failing igniter
  • Burner not igniting properly
  • Gas released before ignition
  • Blocked or dirty burner ports
  • Improper air-to-gas mixture
  • Gas supply or connection issue

Operational Note

A brief gas odor may be noticeable during ignition as part of the normal burner lighting process, but it should dissipate within a few seconds once the flame stabilizes.

Any gas smell that persists during operation is not normal and should be evaluated.

 Step 1: Identify when the smell occurs

Steps:

  • Occurs only at startup → likely normal ignition
  • Occurs before flame appears → possible delayed ignition
  • Occurs during operation → abnormal condition
  • Occurs continuously → unsafe condition
  • Occurs every cycle → likely mechanical issue]
  • Occurs intermittently → possible airflow or ignition inconsistency

Important:

  • A brief smell (1–3 seconds) at ignition can be normal.
  • Anything beyond that is not considered normal.

Step 2: Confirm ignition performance

Steps:

  • Start oven and observe ignition timing
  • Ignition should occur within 3–5 seconds
  • Flame should appear evenly across the burner
  • No prolonged gas release before ignition
  • Test multiple start cycles for consistency

If you notice:

  • Delay before ignition
  • Gas smell before flame appears
  • Repeated clicking without ignition

→ Ignition performance is not normal

Step 3: Evaluate flame stability

Steps:

  • Observe flame during operation
  • Flame should be steady and consistent
  • Flame should be mostly blue with minimal yellow tips
  • Confirm flame remains stable during cycling

If the flame is:

  • Weak or uneven
  • Yellow/orange
  • Flickering excessively
  • Dropping out and relighting

→ Gas is not burning efficiently

Step 4: Inspect burner condition

Steps:

  • Check for food debris or grease buildup
  • Ensure burner ports are clear
  • Verify burner caps are properly aligned
  • Confirm burner is seated correctly
  • Allow unit to cool before inspection

Step 5: Evaluate airflow & ventilation

Steps:

  • Confirm proper kitchen ventilation
  • Ensure range hood is operating
  • Check for restricted airflow inside oven
  • Avoid blocking airflow with large trays
  • Consider recent cleaning or installation changes

Important:

  • Ventilation affects odor perception, not gas presence

Step 6: Reset the oven

A reset can clear temporary faults related to overheating or control interruptions.

Steps:

  • Turn OFF the circuit breaker
  • Wait at least 2 minutes
  • Turn the breaker back ON
  • Test the oven at 350°F (175°C) using Convection / Fan mode

Step 7: Identify unsafe conditions

Steps:
  • Strong gas smell that does not dissipate
  • Gas smell with no visible flame
  • Smell increases over time
  • Physical symptoms (headache, dizziness, irritation)

Gas smell with no visible flame Turn OFF the gas supply (if accessible).
Any unsafe condition present Open windows for ventilation.
