Broiler Not Heating – Professional Plus

Overview

The broiler function in Professional Plus ovens uses upper heating elements (electric) to provide intense radiant heat for grilling and browning. The oven operates through an electronic programmer system, which directly controls whether heating functions are allowed to run.

When the oven is first powered on, it defaults to AUTO mode, and must be switched to manual mode before any cooking function will operate . If this step is missed, the broiler will not heat—even if properly selected.

The broiler does not stay continuously on—it cycles to regulate temperature. This is normal behavior and often mistaken for a fault.

Common Causes

Broiler issues are most commonly related to:

  • Oven still in AUTO (not manual mode)
  • Function not correctly selected
  • Timer or program blocking operation
  • Normal heating cycle misunderstood
  • Insufficient preheat time
  • Rack position too low

Operational Note

  • The broiler uses high, direct heat from the top element
  • The element may cycle on and off during use
  • The oven must be set to manual mode to function properly

If the programmer is not in manual mode, the broiler will not operate.
The broiler element may not glow continuously — this is normal.

Troubleshooting Tip

Review the troubleshooting chart on the following page before contacting service.
Possible Cause What To Do
Oven not in manual mode Set programmer to manual mode
Incorrect function selected Turn selector to broil/grill
Timer blocking operation Clear or set timer
Oven not preheated Allow full preheat time
Rack position too low Move rack closer to broiler
Cycling heat Normal operation

Step 1: Confirm manual mode is active

Steps:

  • Check display for AUTO symbol
  • Press and hold + / – buttons simultaneously (≈4 seconds)
  • Confirm oven switches to manual mode

Important:

  • Oven will not heat until manual mode is active

Step 2: Select broiler function

Steps:

  • Turn function knob to Broil/Grill
  • Set temperature if required

Result:

  • Broiler element should begin heating cycle

Step 3: Check timer/programmer settings

Steps:

  • Ensure no delayed start or end time is active
  • Reset timer if necessary

Action:

  • Oven should operate normally once cleared

Step 4: Allow proper preheat

Steps:

  • Wait for oven to reach temperature
  • Allow additional time if needed

Important:

  • Initial heat may take several minutes

Step 5: Check rack position

Steps:

  • Inspect rack placement

Result:

  • Move rack closer to broiler element

Step 6: Observe broiler behavior

Steps:

  • Monitor heating performance

Result:

  • Heat cycles on/off → Normal
  • Delayed heat → Allow more time
  • No heat → Continue diagnosis

Step 7: Identify pattern

SituationObserved BehaviorWhat It Indicates
AHeat begins after a short delayNormal operation
BBroiler cycles on and off during useTemperature regulation (normal)
CWeak or uneven browningRack position or insufficient preheat
DNo heat after proper setupSetup issue or possible internal problem

Step 8: Identify unsafe conditions

Check for:

  • No heat after extended time
  • No response when selecting broil
  • Inconsistent or no activation

If any of these occur:

  • Turn OFF appliance
  • Do NOT continue use
  • Allow unit to cool
  • Contact service

When to contact service

Service is required if:

  • Broiler produces no heat after proper setup
  • No response from broil function

Possible causes include:

  • Upper heating element issue
  • Control system malfunction
  • Electrical connection issue

These components require inspection by a qualified service technician.
