Overview
ILVE Nostalgie ranges use an electronic ignition system combined with a flame safety control (thermocouple) to ignite and maintain burner operation.
To ignite a burner, the control knob must be pressed, turned to the ignition position, and held for several seconds to allow the flame to stabilize. The ignition system produces a clicking sound during this process.
During normal operation, the clicking should stop once the flame is established and the safety system confirms stable combustion.
If the clicking continues after the burner is lit, this typically indicates that the system is still attempting to spark because it is not detecting a stable flame condition. In most cases, this is caused by moisture, cleaning residue, burner misalignment, or improper ignition technique rather than a component failure.
Common Causes
If burners are clicking constantly, the issue is typically related to:
- Moisture in burner or ignition components
- Burner cap or flame divider misaligned
- Food debris around igniter
- Knob stuck in ignition position
- Electrical ignition switch sticking
- Recent cleaning or spillover
Operational Note
Nostalgie burners require holding the knob after ignition to allow the thermocouple to heat up and confirm flame stability.
- Clicking is normal during ignition only
- Knob must be held for several seconds after ignition
- Releasing too early may cause the system to continue sparking
Continuous clicking is most commonly caused by improper ignition technique, moisture, or burner alignment—not a failure.

Step 1: Confirm proper burner operation
Steps:
- Press and turn knob to ignition position
- Hold knob for 3-5 seconds
- Observe ignition
Result interpretation:
- Clicking stops → Normal operation
- Clicking continues → Continue diagnosis
Step 2: Check for moisture
Steps:
- Determine if cooktop was recently cleaned
- Inspect for water or condensation around igniter
Action:
- Allow burners to fully dry
- Retry ignition
Important:
- Moisture can cause continuous sparking even when flame is present.
Step 3: Inspect burner alignment
Steps:
- Remove grates and burner caps
- Check alignment of burner components

- Ensure burner sits flat and centered

Step 4: Check ignition area
Steps:
- Inspect igniter and surrounding area
- Remove grease or debris

- Clean gently with non-abrasive material

- Restart ignition
- Clicking stops after reset → Knob issue
- Clicking continues → Continue
Step 6: Reset the oven
Steps:
- Turn OFF the circuit breaker
- Wait at least 2 minutes
- Turn the breaker back ON
- Test the oven at 350°F (175°C) using Convection / Fan mode
Step 7: Observe temperature behavior

Step 8: Identify unsafe conditions
Steps:
- Clicking continues with flame present
- Clicking occurs with burner off

If any of these occur:
- Turn OFF appliance
- Do NOT continue use
- Contact service
When to contact service
Service is required if:
- Clicking continues after all cleaning and drying steps
- Ignition system activates without user input
- Multiple burners are affected consistently
Possible causes include:
- Faulty igniter
- Electrical supply issue
- Ignition module failure
